dispatch from #todaysoffice // remembering to breathe (#001)
Hello. This week I write from Point Reyes Station, CA where the sun is just peaking up over the hills and the town bakery is where all the morning action is. As a buddy of mine put it yesterday “the metronome just beats slower up here.” PRS was my regular weekend escape while we were SF-based and continues to be the place I go to ground. Which I’m finding all the more necessary living in the NYC hustle.
A week in California does this body great: time on the beach, time with friends & babies (some of them no longer babies), time breathing crisp air, time hiking in the woods, time eating incredible food, time reading scripts, time doing yoga, and some time shooting footage for a project I can’t wait to get off the ground. More on that soon.
Last week I mentioned Obvious Child opening in LA & NY. This week it expands to Boston, Chicago, SF, other places, and my home turf: Fairfax, VA. I swear nothing cool ever opened in Fairfax when I was growing up.
In a world where there’s a 100 hours of video uploaded to YouTube a minute it can be a struggle to get people to watch your beautifully crafted indie film. The filmmakers behind Obvious Child and three other indie summer releases (Hellion, Ping Pong Summer, & Lucky Them) have teamed up to create the SUMMER INDIE MOVIE CHALLENGE. Watch all four films then tweet/share your ticket stub or receipt. At the end of the summer the filmmakers will mail you a small package of gifts. I think this is pretty fucking brilliant. Often the film business feels like your success means someone else's failure. Here a bunch of filmmakers are banded together so that everyone can win. I’m in. You?
Meanwhile… The ever-lovely Audra won her 6th Tony! Protests continue as the World Cup begins. My SXSW favs 10.000KM & Boyhood won Directing awards in Seattle. And the 74th school shooting since Newtown. Enough already.
If you are in NY check out BAMcinemaFest. Both Boyhood & 10.000KM are playing. Along with my Sundance fav Appropriate Behavior and many other great films. In SF? DocFest & National Queer Arts Festival are happening now & Frameline is just around the corner.
Also, Bay Area people, apologies for double booking over Father's Day but Leah and I will be hanging at Dolores Park Sunday afternoon. Come visit us!
until next week,@kylerw
