I debuted the newsletter’s current aesthetic a year ago to coincide with a name change and the essay 17 Reasons for Being Alive. The design was always meant to be temporary. I made something quick and functional, but it felt cold. And the entire ethos of this writing practice is about inviting in more joy.
Thanks for sharing your design process, Kyle. They're all great, but I'm also partial to #1 and #3 for their simplicity and contrast, especially if seen as a smaller thumbnail, which is where I most often notice Substack logos. Sending love to the LGBTQIA community.
I always experience such power in your beautiful work, Kyle. For me, the lower right-hand corner works best. The text of the blog's title is strong against a darker color, and inside the triangle, I see either a sunrise or a sunset - which can invoke either "stormy" or "serene" energy - and both are adjectives that, for me, powerfully define you and your work.
Thank you for this beautifully written, honest blog post. I also like the 3rd one but I feel more strongly drawn to the deeper colors and contrast in the 1st one.
I just discovered your newsletter, and what a fantastic piece to start with. The new logo options look so good together, though I like one and three as they are a bit more optimistic in their color than the other two.

I like top right (not sure which number that is).💜

I think the third one is best. Title is easily clear at a small size and the colors of the sky in the triangle are calming and reflective.
