Thank you for this. I am working on something for Wednesday and it really helped me wrap my head around a bunch of pieces of it. I'm going to link to it. Thank you thank you.

Seeing your corrections on the paper version makes me wish for more physical copies- I'd love to infiltrate the coffee houses and bakeries across town that have copies and update them

Thank you for this. Nuance yes. Also, I really hate that TERF.

Wow. Thank you for having the patience and the fortitude and the generosity to write this. I, too, have had an intense, long-term relationship with the New York Times--when I was growing up in Pittsburgh, my father would bring it home from work on the weekdays, and he would go out and buy the Times on Sunday at the university newsstand. My parents did the Sunday crossword together in INK. Of course I started reading it when I was 7. That's 58 years ago. (Also: yay Lydia Polgreen!)

Now, I just slide my eyes away from certain bylines, and Paul tops that list. I am grateful to you and to Erin for NOT doing that.

I thought my subtle animosity for the NYT was just due to my getting dumped by one of its top brass back in 2002 (I mean he wasn't top brass THEN, but still), but this reminded me that there are other reasons. I'm deeply saddened by the impact a column like this could have, given how many parents of teens who are NYT subscribers are already just barely teetering on the edge of acceptance of their children (and I'm being generous there, as you know). I can just see one of my daughter's friends' mothers shoving this in her child's face with a "See this??" Feels deeply irresponsible and actually very dangerous, stamping actual garbage with an implied NYT approval. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, and in such a cogent way. xoxo

Thank you, Kyle! I heard about this article a couple days ago from a post by Blair Peters, @queersurgeon on Instagram and have been waiting apprehensively for it to show up in the various email newsletters I get from the NYT. I was pleased to note its absence in The Weekend. Your excavation of it here is a gift. I look forward to the one about the IDs that you tabled to do this, too.
